HOW TO MAKE: A CARDBOARD TUBE FAMILY

You may not think much of this activity, but I did it with Ottilie (Age 3) this morning and she loved it! Check out the pics below.

All you need is… cardboard tubes or toilet rolls (one for each member of your family), PVA glue (or even better, a glue gun) and lots of crafty bits or anything you have around your house. You really can make them with anything!

Here are some of the things we used…
Tissue paper or paper towel
Ribbon or string or wool
Paper or card
Buttons or googly eyes
Pipe cleaners or lolly pop sticks or paper straws

Check out our step-by-step guide below and pics of Otts enjoying her family!

We would love to see what you make - share @themillhousehertford

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME

Hello, I’m Charlie!

I setup The Mill House back in 2018.

Previously working as an event & experiential Graphic Designer in London for the last 10 years, I was itching for a change.

Not long after having Ottilie, a warehouse space became available on the Dicker Mill estate in Hertford, at the same time, the design studio I was working for closed so Ben and I took the plunge and decided to setup The Mill House.

We worked nights while Otts slept, renovating the unit from a very run down metal workshop to a bright, white inviting space! Any downtime from the space I’d spend working on the branding and building the website (and looking after Otts!). Within a few months we were up and running, we had a lovely little launch night where we met some wonderful locals and it all grew from there.

From day dot I’ve loved anything creative, my Grandpa Papa was an Artist, we would paint together (check out the pic below!), my Granny ran her own art gallery and was a true inspiration.

At school I lived in the art block, it was my escapism and I loved the freedom. I didn’t have to try and write or spell or pretend I knew what they were talking about in Maths. Naturally, the next step was to do an Art Foundation course which is where I fell in love with Design and which led me to Chelsea Art College, where I studied Graphic Design.

I’ve always wanted to pass on my love for all things creative, so when we opened TMH I setup the Little Artist art club and art parties. I can’t wait for these to be up and running again soon! In the meantime, checkout this blog for crafty tips and inspiration to hopefully bring a little creativity into your home during lockdown 3.0.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and all those who have supported us over the last couple of years!

Stay safe,
Charlie x

FESTIVE FUN @ HERTFORD THEATRE

Ottilie was in caterpillar heaven!! We had a lovely afternoon at Hertford Theatre watching The Very Hungry caterpillar Christmas Show .

Ott’s is nearly 3 and she loved every minute, glued from start to finish. The colourful lights, the clever animal puppets and the caterpillar which grew ‘Bigger, bigger, BIGGER’ (In her words!). She’s still talking about it 3 days later.

We came in through the main entrance into a well organised one way system around the big tree, parked up the buggy in the River room with no problem at all and queued up for a beer at the bar. There were hand sanitiser stations dotted around the foyer, it was all really well done.

In the auditorium, there were pockets of people dotted around the rows with plenty of gaps and marked off seats to ensure we were all well spread out. There was a lovely festive vibe, the kids made up for less people and were as noisy as ever!!

We felt really fortunate to be able to sit in a theatre and enjoy a show after the year we’ve all had! I’d really recommend this for the littles or anyone who’s in need of a pick-me-up and some festive cheer this Christmas. - thank you Hertford Theatre!

UPDATE: The show has been cancelled from end of day on 18th December 2020 due to being moved into tier 3, but the good news is that tickets are available to view the recorded performance. Head over to…
